1) THE DOE FUND AT UNION SQUARE TRAVEL AGENCY
It is the summer of 2023, and the recreational use of cannabis was just legalized in the state of New York. Now, it feels like the city is flooded with places to buy everything, from classic products to new interesting ways to consume cannabis. Even though consuming cannabis is now legal, the place where you buy your products matters, not only in terms of the quality of the product you get but in that the money you spend has an impact beyond the store.
Licensed recreational dispensaries are owned and operated by people who have been criminalized for marijuana-related offenses, or by nonprofits whose goal is to provide services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system. There are currently 6 licensed places to buy cannabis in the city (more are coming!). This map shows the currently open dispensaries in Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx.

I focused my research on the third licensed dispensary in Manhattan: Union Square Travel Agency. USTA donates more than 50% of the proceeds to The Doe Fund, an organization that provides employment, transitional and permanent housing, and support to people who have experienced homelessness and incarceration. During my visit, I found very interesting products. Browse below to see some examples.
