I observed a selection of rides within the parks and recorded the noises that engulfed that area. This is what I saw when I listened to these sounds.
This roller coaster was running with no guests on it, which made the atmosphere really eerie. Normally, you’d hear people laughing or screaming, but this was just the silence and the clicks of the coaster.
A carnival man was shouting “bigger the group, bigger the prize” at guests that walked past his booth in order to get their attention. I collaged elements of objects, signs, and posters to make this image and capture the noises.
Screams that sounded like they came from the depths of Hell were hearable from outside of this attraction from the participants inside the ride. It’s a 4-D experience, so it probably is horrifying due to the combination of storytelling and the thrills of zombies chasing you.
Horses are cute. It was just a good ole fashioned ride. The horses rode up and down slowly in a circle within the carousel parameters. It was nauseating to look at as I remember that I am a fully grown adult at 23, yet just 10 years ago I was on one of these with my younger siblings. Time is weird.
I used to have a small version of this Go Fish game at my grandma's house. My family never paid to play the big version because carnival games are often rigged, but it was still enjoyable to hear the popping noises that came from the plastic fish heads as their mouths opened and closed.
Dragons are cool, babies crying are not. I don’t know if they were afraid of these giant creatures or if they were just being misunderstood by their parents.
Racing Karts and I go waaayyy back. I drove on a racing track when I was younger and had a great time until some kid in the car behind me forgot that we weren’t in bumper cars. There was no solid safety cushion to protect either of us. The kid slammed their car into me, and me behind the very tall person that I am, slammed my knee into the wheel. My knee throbbed for the rest of that day and I had a really big bruise the day after.
My favorite part about Coney Island is this boardwalk area that lives between the amusement parks and the beach. It’s such a high traffic area between the park goers, the food lovers, and the beach enjoyers. All the different people that walk by are so interesting in their amusement outfits and beach attire. I hope they all wear sunscreen.
